remove.bg is shutting down: the best background removers in 2026
October 15, 2026 · 5 min read

remove.bg, the site that made one-click cutouts famous, is closing. Its own FAQ says the standalone site shuts down on 1 December 2026. The web tool moves into Canva, which owns it, and the API moves to Leonardo.Ai. If remove.bg was your go-to, here's what to use instead.
Moves elsewhere
- The web tool: into Canva, on a paid plan.
- The API: to Leonardo.Ai. Enterprise contracts carry on.
Ends on 1 December
- Unused pay-as-you-go credits — they expire.
- The self-serve API and its free monthly calls.
- The Photoshop plugin and every other integration.

Photoroom: built for product photos
Photoroom is the closest thing to remove.bg for shops and marketplaces. Batch mode cuts out up to 250 images at once, it adds soft or hard AI shadows, and it has apps for iOS, Android, Figma and Shopify. Its API costs $0.02 per image — the natural move for anyone leaving the remove.bg API.
Best for: online sellers and anyone cutting out dozens of products a week.
Canva: remove.bg's official successor
Canva owns remove.bg, so this is where its web tool is going. The remover sits inside Canva Pro and up — there's no free version — and works right in your design: erase and restore brushes, folders of up to 50 images, and backgrounds removed from videos under 10 minutes. Results over 10 MP are scaled down to 10 MP.
Best for: people who already make thumbnails, posts and slides in Canva.
Adobe: free in Firefly, paid in Express
Adobe's background remover is free in Firefly for anyone with an Adobe account, within a daily allowance, for JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 50 MB. Inside Adobe Express, removing an image background is a Premium feature at $9.99 a month. Adobe says it doesn't use customer content to train its generative AI.
Best for: a few cutouts a day without paying, or Express users.
Editor Hub: free and fully private
Our Background Remover works differently: the AI model runs in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded. There's no account, no watermark and no limit. Restore and Erase brushes fix edges by hand, and you can export a transparent PNG or WebP, or put the subject on a solid colour.
