Every tool below will produce a chat bubble. They differ in three ways: what it costs, where it runs, and how much of the work it leaves to you. Some are free and live inside your editor. Some are templates you pay for and edit by hand. One is a browser tab. The prices and limits here were read on each tool's own page on 25 October 2026.

Free tools

TextBack is a free tool from Audio Vision Productions, built for editors. You type the chat message by message, press RENDER, and drag the transparent clip onto your timeline. It draws 19 looks, including iMessage, WhatsApp and Discord, with typing dots and a sound for every message, and its control panel has buttons for photos, voice and video messages. In DaVinci Resolve Studio the clip lands at the playhead by itself. Its pages list Resolve, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and CapCut; they do not say which operating systems it runs on, and the download form comes with update emails you can unsubscribe from. Best for: editors who want sounds and who do not mind an install.

Text Message Animator is the browser version of the same job. Type up to 40 messages of up to 280 characters, pick one of 19 styles in light or dark, choose 9:16, 1:1 or 16:9, and export Video · WebM with alpha, a PNG sequence or a single PNG. Free, no watermark, no sign-up, and nothing leaves your browser. Best for: a phone, a borrowed computer, or any editor that is not on TextBack's list.

Starting Frame's Bubble tool is another free, in-browser option. It needs no account, adds no watermark, and exports a transparent .webm or an MP4, with typing indicators between messages. Its page does not state a message limit, a resolution or a clip length. Best for: a quick bubble, or one chat in a style you can tweak colour by colour.

Templates you buy

Envato Elements has more than 40 text message templates for After Effects, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Apple Motion, from 720p up to 4K. The Core plan is $16.50 a month billed yearly (no monthly price is listed), with a commercial licence on every plan; cancellations are not refunded. You are paying for the whole library, which is useful if you also need music and footage. Best for: client work that needs editable layers. Motion Array sells similar packs; its site refused our automated check, so we quote no price.

Filmit's ChitChat is a panel inside After Effects. Type the conversation and it builds native comps in iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger or a terminal look, with GIF search and reactions. It comes with Filmit Pro at $20 a month or $192 a year; the 7-day trial asks for a card. It supports After Effects and Premiere Pro CC 2020 and newer. Best for: After Effects users who want to edit every bubble afterwards.

In CapCut and with AI

CapCut's site lists text message video templates as free, and its Pro plan is EUR 12 a month or EUR 79.99 a year as shown to us. Its own guide, however, says CapCut has no built-in feature for fake text videos and treats it as the place to finish a video made elsewhere, with pop-up sounds and music. The pages we read do not say whether a given template carries a watermark. Best for: a one-off post you finish inside the app.

Easymotion is an AI motion graphics generator with a chat animation maker. You can remix its 15 or more chat templates for free and export them at 1080p; writing your own prompt needs a paid plan from $10 a month. A transparent MOV for After Effects, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve comes with Plus ($20 a month, $16 billed yearly) or Pro. Best for: people who already use it for other motion graphics.

Where Text Message Animator falls short

What it does

  • 19 styles, each in light and dark, plus a typing bubble you can switch off.
  • Transparent or green screen, in 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9.
  • Free, no watermark, nothing uploaded.

What it does not

  • Text only. TextBack's panel has buttons for photos, voice and video messages.
  • No sound. Add the pop in your editor.
  • A rendered clip, not editable layers. To change a message you change the text and export again.

A tool that lists its limits is easier to trust than one that does not have any. If you need one of the right-hand column, use one of the other six.
