How to add animated text messages to a video in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, Final Cut Pro and After Effects
October 25, 2026 · 6 min read

A chat overlay is only useful if your editor agrees to show what is behind it. There are three exports, five editors, and no single answer. This is normal: the answer depends on the editor, and the editors have not been asked to agree. Below is what each one documents, what it does not, and the export that works anyway.
02
Import
As a clip, or as a numbered sequence
03
Place above your footage
On a track over the video
04
Key it, if it is green
Only for the green screen export
Which export for which editor
| WebM with alpha | PNG sequence | Green screen and key | Use | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premiere Pro | Not on Adobe's supported list; add-on importers exist, and reports say alpha gets lost | Yes: File › Import, tick Image Sequence | Ultra Key | PNG sequence |
| After Effects | Not native; the free WebM plug-in is reported to lose alpha on import | Yes: File › Import, tick PNG Sequence | Keylight | PNG sequence |
| DaVinci Resolve | WebM is not on Blackmagic's list; VP9 is, inside mov, mp4 and mkv | Yes: PNG with alpha is on the list; set the display mode to Sequence | 3D Keyer | PNG sequence |
| Final Cut Pro | Not listed: Apple's formats are MOV, MP4, MXF and AVI | PNG is a supported still; Apple documents no numbered-sequence import | Green Screen Keyer | Green screen |
| CapCut | Not on CapCut's import list; reports say the desktop app opens it, alpha unreliable | PNG imports as separate images, one clip per frame | Chroma key under Cutout | Green screen |
WebM with alpha: small file, uneven support
Video · WebM with alpha is VP9 video with a transparent background, one small file, recorded at 30 fps in real time. It is the right export for browsers and for editors that read it. For the five editors here, treat it as a bonus rather than the plan.
Why you would try it
- One small file instead of hundreds of frames.
- Transparency is part of the file, so there is nothing to key.
- Reports say DaVinci Resolve and some CapCut versions open it.
Why it may not work
- Not on the supported list of Premiere Pro, After Effects, Resolve (as a container), Final Cut Pro or CapCut.
- Importers for Premiere can open the file and drop the alpha.
- A black background means the editor read the video and ignored the transparency.
Premiere Pro: PNG sequence
- 1Export a PNG sequence. In Text Message Animator choose
PNG sequence, with the background set to transparent, and unzip the .zip into its own folder. - 2Set the frame rate. Open
Preferences›Mediaand pick 30 fps underIndeterminate Media Timebase, because the frames are 30 fps. - 3Import it as one clip.
File›Import, select the first numbered file, tickImage Sequenceand open. Adobe says each numbered file then becomes one frame of a video clip. - 4Place it above your footage. Put the clip on a track over the video. The transparent areas show the footage underneath.
Premiere reads the sequence from the equal-length numbers at the end of the file names, so leave the names as they came. If you still get hundreds of separate stills, the tick box was missed.
After Effects: PNG sequence
- 1Export and unzip the
PNG sequenceas above. - 2Import.
File›Import›File, select the first PNG, tickPNG Sequenceand open. - 3Check the rate. Adobe says a still sequence uses the
Sequence Footagepreference, 30 fps by default, which matches the export. - 4Drop it into the composition above the footage layer.
DaVinci Resolve: PNG sequence
- 1Export and unzip the
PNG sequence. - 2Show sequences as clips. On the
Mediapage openMedia Storage, use the three-dot menu and setFrame Display ModetoSequence. - 3Import. Browse to the folder. The frames appear as a single clip; drag it into the media pool.
- 4Place it on a track above your footage. PNG with alpha is on Blackmagic's supported list, so the transparency stays.
Final Cut Pro: green screen
Apple's list of media formats does not include WebM or VP9, and Apple documents PNG as a still image, not as a sequence you import as a clip. So the plan is an ordinary opaque video with a green background, which Final Cut Pro has a keyer for.
- 1Export on green. Choose the green screen background (
#00B140) and exportVideo · WebM. - 2Convert to MP4. An opaque green video needs no alpha, so any converter will do. With FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i chat.webm -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p chat.mp4. - 3Import the MP4 and connect it above the clip in the storyline.
- 4Add the keyer. In the
Effectsbrowser chooseGreen Screen Keyer. Apple's effect samples the green and removes it, with spill removal on by default.
CapCut: green screen
- 1Export on green and, if your CapCut version refuses the WebM, convert it to MP4 as above. CapCut's own import list names MP4 and MOV.
- 2Add it as an overlay on a track above your footage.
- 3Key it. Select the clip and click
Cutout, tickChroma key, and pick the green with the colour picker. - 4Adjust. Raise
Strengthuntil the green is gone without holes, then useShadowto clear the green fringe on the edges.

Questions
Does Premiere Pro support WebM with alpha?
Not natively. WebM and VP9 are not on Adobe's supported list, third-party importers exist, and reports say transparency is lost. Use a PNG sequence: File › Import, select the first numbered file and tick Image Sequence.
How do I import a PNG sequence into DaVinci Resolve?
On the Media page, set Frame Display Mode to Sequence in the Media Storage menu, browse to the folder and the frames appear as one clip. Blackmagic lists PNG with alpha as supported.
Why is my overlay black instead of transparent?
The editor read the video and ignored the alpha channel. That happens with WebM in editors that do not support it. Use the PNG sequence, or export on the green screen background and key it out.
Does Final Cut Pro import WebM?
No. Apple's supported formats are MOV, MP4, MXF and AVI, and WebM and VP9 are not listed. Export on green, convert to MP4 and use the Green Screen Keyer.
How do I remove the green in CapCut?
Select the clip, click Cutout, tick Chroma key, pick the green with the colour picker and adjust Strength and Shadow.
